Another Day Off: Shubun no hi
Yesterday was our second Monday off in a row. September is good like that. It was Shubun no hi or Autumn Equinox. We got a day off to go to the family graves and tidy them up and pay respects to the ancestors. Lots of people also make their rounds of their relatives. I know this since my neighbours across the road, the lovely O Family, had so many people coming and going.
As you many know, DH's family lives at practically the other end of Japan, so we weren't able to go to his family grave, and we are many many thousands of kilometers away from where my father is buried in New Zealand. So we made an effort to remember him and teach Amelia about him too.
We got his special photo, decorated it up with some flowers cut from my garden and gave him an offering of dango , since we made some more for morning tea and he got fried rice for lunch. Unfortunately, Amelia didn't take kindly to the photo of my father getting first dibs on the dango and insisted on having them. So he got second best pick, in a blue plastic bowl instead. Oh well.
In the afternoon we went to one of the main attractions where we live: Spa Resort Hawaiians. We decided to go late in the day, hoping that lots of people would have already left by the time we got there. It wasn't too crowded but still a lot of people making the most of their day there. We enjoyed ourselves a lot, too. So it was a great day off. Back to reality today. We will have to get used to 5 day weeks again until the next public holiday in a whole 3 weeks time, which is "Sports Day".
